As with all the pictures I post here, feel free to use them if you like them. These are the ones that turned out nice. Not as many "ok" or even useable photos as I wanted but I had fun taking them.

Awesome quality pix as usual.Carracer wrote:OK, I think I fixed it. I hope.
I just learned today that using the little right corner down arrow I can download these pix rather than print them....DOH.
It even let me pick the quality so of course I asked for "better than real".
Thanks again for your effort Phillip.

Re: July 18th Post Event (Niar, Niar, Niar Tim)
Didn't go the way I planned it, but it was a fitting way to end the season, and a good farewell event for the Miata.
I FINALLY beat Chris Hammer (by 0.03!), and wouldn't you know it, someone even faster showed up and I still finished in 2nd f*cking place. Sheesh.
Still enough to win M2 for the season. Although I wish Kurtis had shown up so we'd have had a real showdown!
Thanks for the photos, Phil! Great as always!

I find that happens all the time Philip (I've shot for the 12hrs of Sebring and Petit Le Mans programs). Great photos as always. And I made the cover image, that's always a bonus!Carracer wrote:Pictures! https://flic.kr/s/aHskgsmQ1U

So cool how your got that wheel to run backwards thru the slalom!!Tim_M wrote:Great season ender course...6 runs too! Tickling the rev limiter in 3rd gear into the slalom is my kind of speed!

How did you do that? Back pedaling the brake? Magic? Reverse Osmosis? Semi Conductor? Mad skills?

Phillip, no matter how slow I drive, your pictures always make me look like a superhero! Thank you! As for the course, it was a fun drive, except for the decreasing slalom. Work group 2, station 6...nice hustle!

Decreasing slaloms are really fun to drive once you accept that you have to let the car DECELERATE through them. They are maddening if you don't. Really fun for terrorizing novices.

Thanks for the compliments on the pictures!
Here is a video of Kyle Sizemore first run.

And this is my video:

Can someone tell if I was doing the turn around wrong? I felt right to me but I don't think I was getting the speed I needed on the way back. I know I did the return slalom wrong, the only time I got that cars rear to move was under acceleration when I over slowed the car. I wasn't nearly aggressive enough getting into it.

Re: July 18th Post Event (Niar, Niar, Niar Tim)
One of the things I have learned from data-logging is that it takes a LOT of speed to compensate for seemingly small amounts of distance. Turn-arounds seemed to really illustrate this. I could carry 1-3mph more average speed through a turn around than my brother and he would still get through it faster by taking a tighter line. In a big, long turn, a little added distance from the center of the arc adds up to a lot of distance over the course of the whole turn. Most of the time, the tighter line is the faster way through a turn-around...even if you have to give up a little speed to make it happen.
Your line was tighter between the two examples so I prefer your approach. However, It looked like you ended up little wide when entering the diagonal "waloms" after the turn around, so you probably should have made an even smaller arc than you did.
This is the line I took, and I still think I should have been tighter on the entry cone.

Thanks, I'm curious how much my problem was I needed a smaller arc and/or I needed to turn in sooner. I had it in my head that I needed to do the opposite because I just wasn't needing 3rd gear on the return side into the slalom yet other 5speed miatas did.Z1NONLY wrote:One of the things I have learned from data-logging is that it takes a LOT of speed to compensate for seemingly small amounts of distance. Re: July 18th Post Event (Niar, Niar, Niar Tim)
Thanks. (although I still need to work on making the car move less laterally and more longitudinally)
It sounds like you lifted around the 28-second mark. (probably to tighten your line) That interrupted your start of the "drag race" through the waloms. Being a little wide also put some lateral force on your tires (also to tighten the line) when you really wanted all the energy going into forward motion. You basically had to make corrections at the beginning of a long acceleration point and that probably cost you a significant chunk of time.
FWIW, I don't think Kyle used third leading up to the slalom either.
Thanks for the great pics BTW.

Re: July 18th Post Event (Niar, Niar, Niar Tim)
When I walked the course I figured it was better not to be tight to the turn around cones and try to get the car as straight as possible early to maximize speed through the wiggles after the turn. I tried that a couple times, then I rode with Steve driving Alex's mustang. Steve was tight to the turn around cones and it felt so Fast! I tried being tight on my next run and shaved 2.6 seconds. Ok so I doubt the entire 2.6 came from being tight but it felt like it.Carracer wrote:Thanks, I'm curious how much my problem was I needed a smaller arc and/or I needed to turn in sooner. Not to drop names but Junior Johnson and Sam Strano have both instructed me and they both say when turning more than 90 degrees tight and tidy wins the race. I felt the best way around that turn was as tight as you could be, adding throttle about 2/3rds the way around and coming out with your car perfectly lined up with the slot and at full throttle. As usual you had to find the slot with your eyes at or before the half way point of the turn. I was on the rev limiter 4 times thru out the course in Loren's 5 speed Miata.

Re: July 18th Post Event (Niar, Niar, Niar Tim)
That turn-around was so easy that I couldn't tell you how I drove it.
The entry apex was a bit of a "sucker apex". You didn't need to go wide on it, but late-apexing AT that cone would put you at the wrong angle to late apex the exit.
Otherwise... just drive it and spot the slot through the fishbone on your way out.

That was one of the best turnarounds EVER for the Airport!!
I love it when there are no downshifts required on a course.
Thanks,
Doug

Re: July 18th Post Event (Niar, Niar, Niar Tim)
2/3 around, it was possible to be at full throttle and squirt right into the next feature. And yes...lots of rev limiter...forever on the rev limiter...just long enough each instance to feel time piling on, but not long enough to make shifting up and back down productive.jbrannon7 wrote:I felt the best way around that turn was as tight as you could be, adding throttle about 2/3rds the way around and coming out with your car perfectly lined up with the slot and at full throttle.
