The paper sheets

Postby Alizarin » Thu Apr 19, 2007 3:09 pm

I'd like to propose a new method for manually recording times. We have a sheet of paper with, say, 6 columns.

Code: Select all

# | Time # | Time # | Time
  | | |
  | | |
  | | |
etc (imagine some horizontal dividing lines too)
When a car finishes, we write car number, and time + cones (or DNF as needed). This way, if we just want a way to double check the computer, we can just run down the list since its the same way they ran. This sheet can be printed on site, there's no shuffling of paper to find the right car's sheet, etc. I understand the want/need to have a redundant system until the computer is shaken out, and agree 100%. With this method, whoever runs the computer can just jot down times as they come in for a backup.

Discuss.

This sounds teriffic! exactly what I was looking for. shuffling 70 sheets of paper is overkill, remember we allready have the Time writer on the board we can hand them a sheet when one fills up.

This is what we do at the SCCA events . One person on the main computer, one person manually writing times on a sheet like above, one person on the second "display only" computer announcing.

Even after the computer is more familiar you probably still want to have the written backup. It also helps in that you have a second person to confer with in case you can't clearly hear or just plain miss a penalty being called in.

Also, at places other than SPC, I would rather have an announcer than someone writing times on the board.

When you're using the paper strictly as a backup for the computer system, all you need is what you described: A log of times. Car number, time and cones in the order that they happened.

If the computer goes TU, you can essentially "replay" the event from the log sheet and re-enter the data.

Push Harder - Drive as close to the limit of your tires as possible.
Suck Less - Drive something resembling a proper racing line.
