R1 - What's eligible?

Okay, this was brought up in another topic. It doesn't affect a lot of people, and we're at the beginning of the season. Might as well fix it now.
Jamie wrote:R1 says, "Any streetable car on race tires...." Need to fix that if you want to push non-street legal stuff into R1. And strictly speaking, we've allowed those before (i.e., Jay Stannard's Formula Ford).
Okay, here's exactly what it says:
"This is our top class. Any streetable car on race tires can compete here regardless of modifications as long as it meets safety requirements."

I propose changing it to read as follows:

This is our top class. Any vehicle on race tires or that is otherwise ineligible for any other class may compete here as long as it meets the following requirements:
- Must meet all safety requirements
- Must meet exhaust sound limitations
- Must have electric start from the driver's seat
- Must have four wheels, minimum 10" diameter, with each supported by springs
- If less than two seats, basic dimensions (wheelbase, weight, etc) must meet that of an SCCA A Modified, B Modified, C Modified or F Modified class car.
- If open-wheel, bicycle fendered, or without a windshield, occupants must wear a full-face helmet.

That should cover most of the bases without getting too deep. (note that it closes that loophole that allows anybody to just compete in R1 because they want to... you have to be ineligible for another class)

Anybody think otherwise?

Sounds correct. I agree with that

I'm not savvy enough to tell - the proposed language would eliminate shifter karts, or other true go-karts, right?

And, since the "R" was for race tires, but that's not necessarily it, shall we also change the class name? Maybe "X" or some such catch-all?

I'm not opposed to changing the name. Would prefer to keep the acronym R1, so try to make it fit that. Race Modified or something.

Yes, requiring 2-seaters to meet AM, BM, CM or FM rules out karts and provides some dimensional stability to weird home built stuff. As does the minimum 10" diameter wheel. (Karts run 5-6" wheels. Classic Mini Cooper's run 10.)

But eliminates Formula Ford and Solo Vee cars.

I believe FF's are in BM or CM.

Solo Vee is FM.

That's specifically why those things are mentioned.

Actually, Solo Vee hasn't been FM for at least a decade. It is uncompetitively in CM with the FFs now, only slightly more competitive than it was in FM which is dominated by the even more "race carey" Formula 500s https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Formula_500 but I think your point stands.

I stand corrected. But still, a Vee is and always will be eligible for one of those Mod classes.

As Steve noted, our prejudice is with actual karts, like F125's and such. And we've excluded them elsewhere. But, it doesn't hurt to further exclude them here.

Anybody got anything else?

Call it Race Modified 1 (R1)?

Sounds good we need a catch all that’s not a go cart and won’t interfere with competition in M0
