End of season awards: Discuss

This thread is for a discussion of what we (as a club) should do for end of season awards. Seeing as it is not the 2nd week of October, things need to be decided on so we can make arrangements for the awards themselves.

My thoughts, assuming we have adequate funding, would be some mini cones with the club logo and "Class Champion" or "2nd place in class 2007" or some other verbiage on it.

T-shirts again? Perhaps mini helmets instead? Or plaques? Discuss.

The last time I read a thread on this topic (somewhere, maybe not here), everyone loved beer mugs with engraving/etching and hated "trinkets that served no better purpose than taking up shelf space".

Given the way we de-emphasized competition when we set things up -- the logic behind the classification system -- I'd go with different set of awards altogether. An event chairman's award for best event...best lunch (!)...most cones hit during the season. Keep 'em simple and creative...plow most of the money back into better events.

Ok, so not only is it "what should we use as an award" but also "what should we give awards for." We already have in the rules that we're giving awards for finishing position in each class, so we should follow through with that, but we didn't say anything about any other accomplishments we might want to recognize...

After thinking it over a bit, I agree with the useless trinket comment. Come decision time, I would vote against any type of "trophy" unless said "trophy" is somehow useful - like shirts, mugs, hats, engraved tire pressure gauges, pencil holders...

I really do like Jeff's idea of the beer mugs... a nice big 20oz (or larger) mug, etched with a version of the club logo perhaps? A free 6-pack to go with it?

We could do a President's Award where Steve can give one out for whatever reason he sees fit. Best Spin Out? Most Use Of Reverse? (I don't think Steve can give himself an award though)

Edit: First hit on Google for engraved beer mugs was http://www.tomsglassworks.com/beer-mugs.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
They give quantity discount and can do custom designs. That was just a quick search too.

There's an idea! I have my favorite beer mug already, but FAST beer...that's innovative!

I think t-shirts are the best idea, I see people wear the ones from last year (NASA?). To me, beer mugs are basically going to be displayed like a trophy anyways. I have a ton of beer mugs in the freezer that very rarely get used, and it's not for the lack of trying.

Another thought could be a magnet with the class and postition that you could put on your car at events.

I like shirts. Either t-shirts, or something a little classier. They not only serve as awards that people can (and do) show off, they also serve as "advertising" for the club whenever people wear them.

Could do a fancy magnet or decal, too. A distinctive "season champion" sticker/magnet would be a cool thing.

+1 for that or stick with T-shirts.......... I do like the idea of best event, most cones killed, stuff like that........I have no use for a beer mug....

Those polo shirts Jeff found are pretty nice, too, if the price is still reasonable. Could do them with the same FAST logo, and the winner's name and class.

The polos from Queensboro aren't available in 1-off embroidery designs.

<-- Not attached to the mug idea, but like it. Was just throwing it out.

We could do a simple '1st in class 2007', 2nd in class, etc. with no names or individual classes. We would be getting 7 or 8 of each that way. And they already have our logo.

I like beer mugs. I like shirts (good polo shirts, not big on T's). I like hats (no hair, need sun protection). These are all items that can all be used.

I like magnetic stickers. They can be displayed on the car all the time.

I hate trophies and other trinkets that can't be used or regularly displayed. They'll just gather dust until my wife gets annoyed then they'll either be tossed or put in a box where they will never be seen again.

Since my driving will never earn me an award for placement, I'm (selfishly) all for merit awards. However none of my spinouts have been that spectacular, so I guess I'll just have to try harder.

Magnet and a T-shirt would work for me.

I really like the idea of awards for accoplishments other than winning. Most cones killed, best spin, best course, best lunch, etc. Any other ideas?

I don't want anything that says "____ place in Class ____" or "Class Champion" or anything like that. Just a plain FAST shirt, hat, or mug would be ideal.

I would wear a shirt that said "1st place Whining" though.

Ok, good discussion here, and at the membership meeting.

I'm now asking for one or two folks to volunteer to be the "awards committee." Ya'll will decide what we give out (within budget, of course), if we do any other non-racing awards like "biggest whiner," and will coordinate some type of awards ceremony of some sort.

Who's willing?

Within the budget? So we can't have solid gold bricks with an inscribed name?

I'm sure we can find some leftover paver bricks at one of those new housing developments going in...

Add a little "Gold" spray paint, and we'll devliver it directly through your windshield :p

Season's over.

Last chance to volunteer to take this on...
