If you look at the map, closely, that three cone slalom is increasing in spacing.

We have learned that the map is a general guideline.

Yeah, don't get too worked up on EXACT cone placement. It's generally plus or minus 4 feet! But, if I draw a "straight slalom", we try to set it up straight. The map is usually pretty close.
As for Chicago boxes... I can't speak for what other clubs do. (the original purpose of a Chicago box was to "cheat" the SCCA's minimum slalom spacing of 45 feet) We experimented with smaller Chicago boxes... like 1.5 blocks in and out. That's about 37 feet. Makes for a really slow and no-fun maneuver, in my opinion. That's why we generally stick with making them no less than 50 feet in/out.
Now, what Joe perceives as "making the exit cone tighter" is actually backwards from what I actually do. I don't make the exit tighter. I usually make the ENTRY easier! I guess the effect is very similar. I'll also play with the placement of the "pin cone" in the middle, usually moving it OUT by a foot or so both to make it easier to see from a distance, and make it easier to not hit it. And sometimes I'll vary the spacing, making it longer on the entry side or the exit side. Much like a slalom... Chicago boxes don't have to be uniform! I love putting two on the same course and making them significantly different from each other in some subtle way. But, I won't do a truly "painful" Chicago box. That's just a recipe for cone homicide.
You can ask anyone who's seen Me/Drew/Steve do a safety check on a course, and they'll tell you... with the exception of occasionally slowing things down near the finish, we're almost always EASING elements and trying to aid visibility to try to reduce the overall cone count and DNFs.
Y'all just don't appreciate how kind and benevolent we are.

My commentary is usually tongue in cheek.

I know, Joe. Still good discussion. Some people might not even think about these things at all if we didn't discuss them from time to time.

I love it when Loren gives away his secrets to why I cannot drive.

The last "school" I taught at we made up a "real" Chicago box and no surprise everyone could get thru it no problem when the pin cone was on the driver's side like Loren did

My wife told me we could go to the ProSolo and put my tires on her automatic vette so I signed up only to find there was no room at the inn anywhere near the place $200/nite for acceptible 3 star hotel 30 minutes away is not affordable or acceptable for 2 nites. Friday would have been a problem with a conflict too - would have missed the practice starts which is critical to hit the green light. Cost me $20 to cancel two days later - saved gas covered that. I never cancelled my FAST fix. Problem solved. Doesn't look like a ton of people I know are going anymore? They only had 125 entrants when I cancelled - up to 133 now - 200cap. The rule is if 120 people didn't sign up two weeks before they would cancel the event. Well they made it to that point so the show will go on.

238 signed up for the Dixie Tour the following week. ES currently the largest class at 15, and most of them pretty quick, too...need some more cannon fodder to sign up. Philip, where are you?!

I've got a question for the event. For SCCA events using that classing, I am STX because of my intake. My stock class is BS. What class should I register for? I am currently S1. Want to be in correct class for my own sake.

http://drivefast.org/rules/classing-overview/
ALL of FAST classing is based on SCCA stock classes. We apply our own modifications rules for our mod classes. Our mod rules don't care about intakes, which means, if that is your only "mod", then for our classing your car is stock. And SCCA BS = FAST S1.

You are fine until you win.

Or until you beat me when I come back to S1. Go Kyle.

What is a loan underwriter? If you want to run in S2 sign up. You can underwrite me then and guarantee a victory against Gerry. Maybe next month underwrite in S1 and guarantee a victory against David and YOu? Why not.
